A Besancon styled tarot is one with traditional Marseilles type imagery, however, the High Priestess and Pope have been replaced by Juno and Jupiter. This alteration occurred so as not to offend the European Catholics of the time. The revived deck you hold in your hands is the result of direct scans of an authentic deck owned by tarot creator Patrick Valenza. The original deck was created c.1850 via woodblock printing and likely colored by unskilled local artisans or even children. Although there were some minor adjustments made to prepare these cards for modern printing, the images were left crude, worn, and “as found”. |
